Independent Business Project
Welcome to the independent local business directory for Mendocino County provided by the Greater Ukiah Localization Project (“GULP”) . This directory is intended to help you identify and to support locally-owned businesses. Choosing to make more purchases with an independent, locally-owned business when possible is a powerful way to strengthen the community and boost the local economy. Money spent at a locally-owned business spends more time circulating in the local area, creating more benefit to the local area.
The directory also features businesses that commit to making an effort to boost other local businesses. Specifically, if a business has a policy of using other independent, local business to supply wholesale inputs or services (e.g., banking and accounting) when possible, they receive a "Silver" level certification. If a business supports both local goods and service providers, they earn a "Gold" level certification. Finally, if a local business has policy of using environmentally-friendly products when possible, they can become a GULP "Platinum" level certified business.

The Greater Ukiah Localization Project is a volunteer, non-profit organization working to strengthen and localize the economy. It has a number of working groups looking at issues such as local business, food production, community outreach and civic action.
